Informal learning is a unique path of knowledge, free from the constraints of traditional education. It’s the experience we gain through life, without structured teachers or strict frameworks, and it develops through interaction, personal curiosity, and experiences outside the classroom. For young people, this approach is invaluable, as it empowers them, connects them with others, and inspires them to become active citizens with consciousness and responsibility. One of the most remarkable examples of this type of learning is the Erasmus+ program "Dancing with Nature", held in Messolonghi. In this program, young people from six different countries came together to experience a multidimensional learning journey through interaction with nature, cultural exchange, and teamwork.
Informal Learning: When Education Becomes Life
Informal learning, as highlighted in educational research, includes experiences that start from personal initiative and evolve through interactions in various environments, such as family, community, and youth programs. According to UNESCO, informal learning does not offer official certification but enhances social inclusion, personal growth, and professional skills. This approach trains individuals to think critically, act independently, and develop skills that do not easily emerge in traditional schooling.
In "Dancing with Nature," informal learning took the form of experiences through nature and cultural discovery. The group of young people from Spain, Italy, France, Slovakia, Lithuania, and Greece gathered in Messolonghi to embark on a journey beyond conventional education. Activities included visits to the Salt Museum and local landmarks, participating in traditional dances, and engaging in environmental cleanup efforts on Tourlida Beach. Every moment was a learning opportunity for the participants as they connected with local traditions and learned about the value of cultural heritage and ecological awareness.
Experiences that Enhance Responsibility and Self-Confidence
One of the most impactful experiences for the participants was the cleanup effort on Tourlida Beach. This was not only a symbolic act of environmental protection but also a genuine lesson in the importance of responsibility towards nature. The young people saw firsthand the effects of human activity on the environment and felt they could contribute positively to the world around them. When you clean a beach or care for the environment in a community, you’re not just learning to protect nature; you’re learning that small actions can have a meaningful impact.
The program also offered activities that encouraged creativity and self-expression, such as the theater workshop at the ancient theater of Pleuron and a photography seminar. Participants were encouraged to express their ideas and emotions while discovering new aspects of their personalities. At the same time, the Climate Fresk Workshop gave the young people the tools to understand climate change, not only theoretically but experientially, demonstrating that informal learning can provide substantial understanding and sensitivity toward critical environmental issues.
The Power of Cultural Exchange
"Dancing with Nature" was not just a program focused on environmental protection. Through contact with new cultures, the young people shared traditions, flavors, and stories, forming deep connections and a strong sense of community. Participants had the chance to see that, despite cultural differences, people can collaborate and inspire each other. This exchange cultivated empathy and helped them realize the importance of intercultural understanding.
Why Informal Learning Is Essential
This program demonstrates why informal learning is so essential in the lives of young people. It’s not just a different form of education; it’s an experience that shapes their thinking and character. In "Dancing with Nature," the young people learned to collaborate, respect the planet, and view the world from a fresh perspective. Returning to their communities, they carry with them not only the knowledge they gained but also the passion to change the world around them. Informal learning provides them with the tools to become responsible, sensitive, and dynamic citizens, ready to protect the environment and promote peace and understanding in a world that needs it more than ever.
